Have you ever wondered how the big
name writers, producers, studio executives
(insert your career aspiration here) got to where they are?
Have you ever looked at all the credits
on a film or television show and wondered who everyone was
and how could you get your name up there?
Or do you have a decent foundation of
the industry, but feel like there are gaps in your knowledge base?
Do you read Variety or Hollywood
Reporter and feel a little lost?
If you don’t know how this town works,
you can’t be a part of it!
ShowBiz
BootCamp is a 10 week intensive course (8 weeks for the summer session)
that breaks down the entertainment industry into bite size pieces. This dynamic course takes away
the mystery of Hollywood and explains how the entire industry works. Film and Television. Business and Creative.
Why is the film spec market on life
support?
Who owns a TV show? (Hint: it’s not the network!)
What is a Line Producer?
Whether
you are an aspiring executive or creative (actor, writer, director, dp,
etc.), this course will give you the knowledge you need to get your
career moving in the right direction. It might even give you a new direction!
Each week in a two hour seminar, we examine a
different aspect of the business.
Topics include:
- What is a producer and the many ways to get
that title
- Story structure for both film and television
- An overview of the film world – how scripts are
sold, how films are made, how films are released
- An overview of the television world – when
things happen, who does what, how the money works
- Development in film and television
- Contracts and Business Affairs
- Current trends

What
previous students have to say about ShowBiz BootCamp
Anyone who is
interested in carving out a career in the entertainment business will
benefit from The Ladder Program’s ShowBiz BootCamp! The class is packed with a ton of
information and I felt it
gave me a tremendous amount of insight into how the machine of
Hollywood runs and operates.
I feel a lot more confident about pursuing my endeavors knowing
that I have considerably expanded my knowledge. Plus, Heidi's energy and
verve give you a good kick in the butt! So be ready, she rocks it!
--Jennifer,
producer/writer/director in independent film
Through my
schooling, jobs, internships and surroundings, I've learned a fair amount
about the entertainment industry, but Showbiz BootCamp really helped fill
the gaps in my knowledge about everything I should know but was somehow
never exposed to. The BootCamp provided me with a thorough understanding
of every aspect of the Film and TV industry that I couldn't have gotten
any other way. As someone starting out, fully understanding the complex
machinery that is the entertainment industry is really invaluable.
--Melissa,
assistant to a Sr. VP in television

Call
in Option
If you
are not going to be in Los Angeles for the entire 10 week course (8 weeks
in the summer) there is a call in option. You can dial into a toll free number to hear and
participate in the lecture in real time!
This
call in option is only available for students who will miss a week or two
in the beginning or end due to their academic calendar or a participant
who will miss one class due to an unmovable conflict. This call in option must be
scheduled in advance and coordinated with the Executive Director.
Why
is ShowBiz BootCamp different from other classes and workshops?
No other class teaches an overview of the industry. There are some classes out there
(UCLA Extension, for example) that will focus on development or
producing, but no one teaches how this town works, in both film and
television, business and creative, from A to Z. ShowBiz BootCamp is a one-stop shop. And ShowBiz BootCamp is cheaper
than most other classes that will only teach you half the equation!
